Founder’s Message

Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness.

Any conversation about mental health should include its potential impact as a result of sexual trauma.

According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN), someone experiences sexual assault every 68 seconds. Survivors of sexual violence often experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and are at an increased risk for thinking about, attempting, and completing suicide. Sexual trauma is also a factor for many individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, addictions, and disordered eating.

For those who are experiencing mental health concerns following sexual trauma, there are many resources available. RAINN lists several national resources on its site, and Courageous Survivors has a resource page with direct links to other helpful organizations. Additionally, mental health professionals are an invaluable asset available to help.

We are pleased to announce the date for this year’s Evening of Hope gala.

The details for the evening are still being worked out, but we are very excited to be able to introduce our Keynote Speaker for the event.

Ron Blake serves as a Director on the Board of the American PTSD Association. He has a passion for helping others feel less alone along their trauma recovery journeys.

Ron is a blue-collar male rape survivor overcoming PTSD on a most unusual journey.

It all began with an unexpected moment of laughter he had on a suicidal night.

Ron has been on a full-time cross-country odyssey that’s involved meeting 32,071 total strangers - one by one. Those individuals wrote their amazing stories in 94 languages with 27 Sharpie marker colors of how they’ve been impacted by PTSD on 494 giant foam poster boards.

Blake gave a TEDx talk about this journey of recovery with a symbolic goal of becoming a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert where he will one day present the massive display of artwork. The colorful collection of stories represents that no one is alone in overcoming trauma and PTSD.

Three talented and dedicated students at Arizona State University produced an Emmy nominated documentary about Blake’s innovative recovery from PTSD. It’s called The Blake Project on YouTube. Hopefully it provides hope and inspiration for others overcoming traumas.

Virtual Support Group

Courageous Survivors offers a support group for female survivors of sexual trauma that has been up and running for over a year and a half now and going strong.

This group is facilitated by a licensed therapist and we have openings. If you or someone you know would benefit for this type of group, please visit our website or contact Janet at janet@courageoussurvivors.org

There is healing in knowing you aren’t alone.
 

Courageous Survivors will have a booth at the Fabulous Phoenix 4th at Steele Indian School Park on Thursday July 4th from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
